How Much Does a British Shorthair Kitten Cost?

What British Shorthair kittens actually sell for in the US, what moves the price up or down, what should be included, and why the cheapest kitten on the listings is usually the most expensive one you can buy.

The Typical Range

In the United States, British Shorthair kittens from registered breeders generally sell for somewhere between about $1,200 and $3,500. Rarer colors and show-quality kittens sit at the top of that, and pet-quality kittens in common colors sit at the bottom.

That is a market observation rather than a quote. Prices vary by breeder, by region and by litter. Ours are given to you in writing when you inquire, along with the deposit amount and everything that is included, before you are asked to pay anything.

What Moves the Price

Color and pattern

Blue is the most requested and sits mid-range. Lilac, chocolate, cinnamon and colorpoint usually cost more simply because fewer are born. If you are flexible on color you will pay less and wait less.

Pet or breeding rights

Most kittens are sold as pets. A kitten sold with breeding rights costs substantially more and comes with conditions. If you are not planning to breed, you want a pet-priced kitten and there is nothing lesser about it.

What the breeder has put in

Twelve to fourteen weeks of raising a kitten properly costs real money: vet visits, vaccinations, worming, quality food, and the queen’s care before and after. A breeder keeping kittens to fourteen weeks has spent considerably more than one pushing them out at eight.

What Should Be Included

Ask any breeder to confirm these in writing before you pay a deposit. If the answer is vague, that tells you something.

  • Vet health check, with the vaccinations due at that age and written records.
  • Parasite treatment up to date.
  • Registration paperwork, and which registry it is with.
  • A written contract covering the price, the deposit and what happens if plans change.
  • Current food and something that smells of the litter, so the move is less abrupt.
  • Ongoing contact with the breeder after the kitten goes home.

Transport is normally quoted separately from the kitten price. Ours is, and you get that figure before the deposit rather than after.

Budget for the First Year

The purchase price is not the real cost. Over the first twelve months, expect to add several hundred dollars at minimum, and often more than a thousand, covering:

  • Neutering or spaying.
  • The remaining vaccination course and an annual check.
  • Food, litter, a carrier, a scratching post and a bed.
  • Insurance, or a deliberate decision to self-insure and the savings to back it.
  • Microchipping if it has not already been done.

None of that is optional in practice. It is worth knowing the full number before you commit rather than discovering it in month three.

Why a Cheap Kitten Is Usually Expensive

A British Shorthair advertised well under the market is the clearest warning sign there is. It usually means one of a few things, none of them good.

It may not be a British Shorthair. It may be leaving its mother at six or seven weeks, which causes behavioral problems that surface months later. It may be unvaccinated, in which case your first vet bill will swallow the saving. Or the listing may not exist at all, which is still one of the most common scams in this breed.

The pattern to watch for is pressure. A deposit demanded today, a story about another buyer waiting, payment by a method you cannot reverse, and a refusal to do a live video call. Anyone unwilling to show you the kitten with its mother, in their home, on camera, is not someone to send money to.

How Our Pricing Works

You get the price, the deposit figure, what is included and the transport cost in writing before you pay anything. Nothing new turns up on collection day.

We do not discount to close a sale and we do not take a deposit from someone who still sounds unsure. If you need a week to think, take the week. We would rather place a kitten slowly and well.
